What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy focuses on the things a person wants and needs to do in their daily life. For kids, these meaningful occupations can include:
  • Play
  • School participation
  • Social engagement
  • Activities of daily living
Occupational therapists are skilled in the evaluation and development of a child’s skills that support their confident participation in daily life.

Therapy Pathways

Bright Beginnings OT and Wellness offers two unique pathways to wellness for your child. An initial evaluation is the first step to either pathway.

Flowchart titled 'Therapy Pathways at Bright Beginnings OT' showing two pathways: Foundations and Bright Start. Foundations pathway includes gradual progress, 1-2 sessions per week, 6-12 month treatment plan. Bright Start pathway includes accelerated progress, starts with 10 hours within one week, transition to follow-up sessions as needed, and neuroadaptive approach.

We will discuss each option to allow you to make an informed decision for your child’s therapy.

Foundations Pathway

Steady growth through weekly OT sessions

The Foundations Pathway provides consistent, supportive occupational therapy at a pace that allows children to build skills gradually. Through weekly sessions, your child develops a strong base of motor, sensory, and self-regulation skills while families receive tools to carry progress into everyday life.

Bright Start Pathway

Accelerated progress through NeuroAdaptive Therapy

The Bright Start Pathway is designed for families who want to see faster results in a shorter period of time. Using NeuroAdaptive therapy™—an evidence-based, brain-focused approach—this pathway provides efficient, concentrated support to help children achieve meaningful gains more quickly. This opens the door for new skills, independence, and brighter days ahead.

    Sensory Processing

Sensory processing refers to the way a person detects, interprets and regulates sensory input, and the resulting behavioral and motor response.

Sensory processing is foundational to the development of a child’s higher level skills, such as attention, planning and organization, academic learning, speech and language, and emotional regulation.

    Primitive Reflex Integration

Some reflexes present at birth should naturally fade as your child grows. When they persist, they can impact coordination, balance, focus, and emotional regulation. Through gentle, targeted exercises and therapy, we help children integrate these reflexes, supporting smoother movement, improved attention, and overall developmental progress.

    NeuroAdaptive Therapy™

NeuroAdaptive Therapy is a neuroscience-based approach that supports your child’s brain and nervous system to accelerate progress in motor skills, regulation, and overall development. Using targeted, evidence-informed techniques — sometimes combined with low level laser therapy — we help children reach milestones faster and more efficiently in a short, focused therapy program.

    Fine Motor

Our hands are integral to learning and interacting with our environment. This includes grasping and releasing toys, holding a crayon or pencil, handwriting, eye hand coordination, dexterity, using scissors, building.

    Gross Motor

We are born to move! OT can work with children to promote their postural control, reflex integration, balance, bilateral coordination, strength, and endurance.

    Daily Living

Children can develop greater independence with activities of daily living, such as feeding, dressing, bathing, toileting, and personal hygiene.

OT Evaluation

If you suspect your child may need occupational therapy services, contact us to schedule an evaluation. This includes a comprehensive 1:1 evaluation of your child’s primitive reflexes, motor development, sensory processing, and self-help skills. Prior to evaluation, you will be provided with an opportunity to express your concerns and desires for your child. Following the evaluation, you will be provided with:
  • A full written report including strengths, areas for growth, and recommendations
  • 45 minute parent conference to discuss the evaluation results, plan of care, and answer questions.

OT Treatment

This is where the fun begins! OT sessions are play based and individualized to the needs, goals, and interests of each child. We creatively weave what is meaningful to your child into activities that target the skills your child is developing. Often when play is involved, kids don’t realize they’re working on a difficult skill! It’s magic!
Sessions take place in your chosen environment—at home, preschool or private school, or our convenient clinic location.
Parent education, including ideas for carryover between sessions, is provided to ensure you feel confident about your child’s plan of care and goal progress.
